How to clean urine :
Urine odor removal
Fresh urine is acidic (pH about 6), however, the urine immediately begins a chemical change due to bacterial action. As the urine decomposes, much of it is converted to ammonia. As this ammonia evaporates, alkaline salts are deposited on the tips of the carpet fibers. Uric salts cause brown or yellow stains. If the salts are not removed in a short time, the ammonia, uric salts, and other chemicals may cause irreversible color loss.
Control of the odor and removal of the stains can only be accomplished by removing the highly alkaline uric salts and by eliminating the source of the odor and bacteria. Because the uric salts are inorganic they cannot be removed by disinfectants or normal spotters. The odor-causing bacteria can be neutralized with an odor neutralizer, a bactericide, or a combination of the two. However, the bacteria and odor can only be removed by direct contact with the source of the problem..
Procedure Number 1
It is crucial to locate all of the urine salts. A UV light (black light) will accomplish this chore. The phosphorus in the urine salts will giveoff a yellow glow when subjected to UV light. To see what it will look like try this in your bathroom and illuminate around your urinal. Now that you know what to look for (at night with no lights on) go to the area where the odor is noticeable. Illuminate the UV light in that area, now mark (I use pieces of paper) the contaminated spots. (it is very important to find all of the contaminated spots)
Procedure Number 2
Do not use alkaline spotters to remove the urine salts, that would catalyze them and make it extremely difficult to remove. Use 3oz of detergent (Tide without bleach, or similar detergent), 1/2 cup vinegar to 1/2 gallon of water. (Test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area.) Spray on area and blot (do not rub)
Procedure Number 3
For mild contamination: Fill a syringe ( which can be purchased at most drug stores) with a disinfectant (test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area) ( I like to use Lysol brand disinfectant) inject into the carpet. Now place several folded paper towels (white towels) over the area and weigh down with books.
For more severe contamination, follow procedures 1,2 after this is accomplished:
pull back the carpet in the contaminated areas
with the tide and vinegar solution clean the urine stains off the back of the carpet.
now remove the contaminated pad and tack strip
note: be very careful removing contaminated tackstrip. DISPOSE OFIMMEDIATELY
clean the floor with a disinfectant cleaner ( Lysol ) then let the floor dry.
paint the subfloor (or concrete) with polyurethane
note: latex type paint will not work. Latex paint breaths - the intent is to seal any residual odors.
spray the back of the carpet with disinfectant
after the carpet and polyurethane has dried, install new tackstrip and pad. (When installing the new tack strip, leave a gully - the space between the wall and tackstrip, the distance should be the width of your carpet.)
note: the pad and tackstrip can be purchased at your local carpet store.it is crucial to purchase the pad with the same thickness and weight
pull the carpet the best you can, and attach to the tack strip. (you may need to rent a knee kicker for this.) Then tuck the carpet in the gully (the area between the tack strip and the wall.)
spay disinfectant on the face of the carpet in the contaminated areas
